"McGiverisms"
You won't find the word in any
dictionary, but a McGiverism is an odd or unusual solution to a problem,
generally brought about by desperation. Mission critical equipment that's
down, angry customers and lack of part availability can all lead to McGiverism
solutions
No parts, no manuals and no support
and a major customer. Brand new $2000 printer! I found a
spring missing from the paper tray. They HAD to be working that day, so
I used a spring form a cheap pen and made a new spring. (Their IT guy
presented me with a coil of solder from his toolkit and told me it was a
spring!)
HOT HOT HOT call.
Defective network card. A DIP switch failed in the open position and I needed it
closed. No soldering tools in my toolkit. I drew a thick line from
one lead to the other using a #2 pencil! It worked for 2 years until they
scrapped the computer!
